ANAMBRA government has waded into a fresh conflict between Nsugbe and Anam communities in Anambra East Local Government Area of  the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that hell was let loose on Sunday at Abata Nsugbe as a dispute between two individuals from either community led to a communal clash.

A popular hotel in Nsugbe was vandalised during the communal clash leading to the loss of an estimated millions of naira.

Many persons also sustained injuries and were taken to undisclosed hospitals within the council area.

The hotel Manager, Mr Ikechukwu Zeigbo claimed that property destroyed was worth more than N20 million.

He demanded that the two communities must provide those who caused the mayhem to face legal action.

The owner of the hotel, Chief Amaechi Okeke, however, decided to bear the cost of damages.

He also offered to pay medical expenses incurred by the injured to pave way for lasting peace and love between the two communities.

Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne held a meeting with leaders of both communities on Thursday to chart a way for peace.

Present at Thursday’s meeting were the traditional rulers of both communities.

Nwabunwanne said that the ministry would engage all principles of conflict resolutions to address identified causes of conflicts and guide the parties towards mutually satisfactory solutions.

He reminded both parties of their brotherliness and cautioned that the unfortunate incident should not cause war between them.

Speaking at the peace meeting, Dr Anslem Onuorah, Transition Committee Chairman of Anambra East Local Government Area, enjoined both parties to remain calm to avoid loss of lives.

The traditional ruler of Nsugbe, Igwe Victor Ntoka and his Umuoba Anam counterpart, Igwe George Ekwealor, expressed readiness to embrace peace to avoid further blood-letting.

The two traditional rulers commended the government for its quick intervention and urged their subjects to remain calm while awaiting government’s pronouncements. (NAN)
