SIX councillors out of 10 representing Aninri LGA were arrested by the Enugu State police command on the order of the Council Chairman, Ezekiel Chukwu.

The councillors quizzed by the police include the Leader of the Council’s legislative house, Deputy, Majority leader and Chief Whip and two other members.

Report have it that the six councillors were marched to the state CID from Ndeabor where they went to witness the distribution of palliative to some indigent persons by the Commissioner for Transport, Mathias Ekweremadu jnr.

The scenario could not be unconnected to the disagreement of the six councillors, who accepted the leadership of the newly elected principal officers contrary to the wish of the executive chairman of the council.

Recall that, Aninri legislative leadership election has been embroiled in factional crisis. Six out of the 10 councillors belong to a faction, while 4 belong to the chairman’s group.

The emergence of the Okereke leadership did not go down well with the chairman, who has raised the issue of illegal and forceful entrance to the legislative chambers for their sitting and conducting their constitutional responsibility.

The matter was taken to the state CID by the executive chairman and it is being handled by D11.

The councilors, who came to perform their constitutional rights were thrown into detention, but was later taken on bail.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ndukwe Emmanuel, said they did not have such records.

Many stakeholders, who commented on the matter, described it as a show of shame on the Council Chairman, who they said, had not even provided palliative to cushion the effect of the lockdown on his people and called for the immediate intervention of the governor.
