THE Lagos Chapter of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) on Saturday night hosted its Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Christmas party for girls and the older generation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event, held in Lagos, was attended by engineering students from tertiary institutions, young and older generation featured dance, games, music, food, gifts, networking among others.

Lagos Chapter chairperson, Dr Atinuke Owolabi, said the celebration was also an opportunity to reflect on the progress made made in the STEM fields.

She praised the exceptional contributions of female engineers to shaping the landscape of STEM through collective dedication, passion, and innovation, which was helping them break barriers to the younger generations.

She said the STEM Christmas Party organised by APWEN, Lagos, was also to celebrate the first female President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Mrs Margaret Oguntala.

“Her ascendancy to the presidency is a testament to her unwavering determination, as she shattered the 65-year male-dominated legacy of NSE presidents.

“Her inauguration symbolises a new chapter in NSE’s journey. Engr. Mrs Margaret Aina Oguntala brings with her a wealth of experience, vast network, and a vision poised to build upon the substantial progress achieved under Engr. Tasiu Sa’ad Wudil’s leadership.

“Today, as we revel in the festive spirit, let’s also acknowledge the significance of diversity and inclusivity in STEM.

“Let’s continue to foster an environment where everyone, regardless of gender, race, or background, feels empowered to pursue their dreams in these fields,” she said.

She thanked Mrs Lois Adeyemo, chairman, organising committee for putting the event together and providing a platform for networking among brilliant minds.

“May this festive season bring us renewed energy and enthusiasm to further our endeavors in engineering, science, and technology,” she said.

Owolabi appreciated the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for providing a 200 capacity hall for STEM and appealed to government to help APWEN equip the place with modern technology to help girls gain knowledge.

Former APWEN National President, Mrs Felicia Agubata, also spoke on the need to help girls to embrace engineering courses through STEM.

She said that mentorship and collaboration with relevant industries and more importantly via scholarship could help the girls.

The Guest Speaker, Mrs Lois Adeyemo, said regular mentorship will help the girls not to get discouraged and change to other courses.

She added that engineering was not a hard job that needed much energy, and women could do it. (NAN)
