Most Rev. Mathew Audu, the Catholic Archbishop of Jos, has called on the Christian faithful to support the poor and the less privileged persons in the society.
Audu, represented by Monsignor Cletus Gotan, the Vicar General (Pastoral) of the archdiocese, made the call at the lunch of its 2021 Lenten Campaign on Sunday in Jos.
According to the prelate, the sharp gap between the rich and the poor is alarming, hence the need for wealthy Christians to care for the needy in the society.
He also urged the rich in the society to desist from wasting their God-given riches on worldly things, but use it to alleviate the sufferings of the poor.
“God allows us to have wealth and riches not to waste it on prostitutes, drinks, expensive clothes, fancy food and other indulgence, but because he wants us to give to the poor.
“Instead of spending your riches on material things, endeavour to use it to touch the lives of the less privileged ones in the society
“Today, Jesus has called on us, particularly the rich among us, to show pity and compassion on the poor, meek and the weak in the society
“Never abandon the plights of the poor and vulnerable in our neighborhood, ”the Cleric said.
He also advised Christians occupying public offices to use their positions to initiate policies that would better the lots of the poor in the society, devoid of religious beliefs or cultural affiliations.
He decried the alarming rate of poverty in the society, hence the need for the Church to intervene by its works of charity and social development.
“Because of the increasing level of poverty in the society, the Church apart of preaching the gospel, is also involved in massive works of charity.
“So, we appeal to Christians, particularly those in authority never to forget Christ’s charter on charity.
“Ensure that the poor have better education, better healthcare, good roads, among other social amenities that will make them live well,”he further urged.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Lenten Campaign lunch enables the the social arm of the Church, the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) to raise funds to support the poor and less privileged ones in the society.
The 2021 Lenten Campaign has the Theme: “Role of the Church in Poverty Reduction Amid COVID-19 and Insecurity in Nigeria”. (NAN)
