A plane carrying election materials and police officers to oversee gubernatorial elections in the Indonesian province of Papua came under fire on Monday, leaving its pilot injured, local media reported.
The plane had just landed at Keneyem airport in the Nduga region when members of an armed group fired on the plane from the left side, leaving the 27-year-old pilot with a gunshot wound, The Jakarta Post reported.
“At 9.45 a.m. (0045 GMT), when the plane was taxiing out to park, ten shots were fired by armed criminals from the left side of the plane,” Papua police spokesman Senior Commissioner AM Kamal told newsmen.
Kamal said that police and soldiers were engaged in shooting with the armed group for several hours. (Dpa/NAN)
