A yet-to-be-identified passerby was reportedly killed in the early hours of Saturday by an armoured cable drum that landed on him during a transloading process at Ojo Igbede Road, Lagos.

The report said the deceased was pressing his phone when the incident happened.

Explaining how the tragedy occurred, spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hudenyin, said the incident occurred at about 8.30 a.m.

He said, “Manager of an Electrical Enterprise dealing in armoured electrical cable reported at the Ilemba Hausa division that at about 8.30am, a Hiab fork lifter was transloading the company’s armoured cable from a container into its body on Ojo Igbede road, by Saint Andrew Catholic Church.

“Incidentally, one of the cable drums disconnected and fell on a passerby who was said to be pressing his phone while walking. And he gave up the ghost on the way to the hospital.”

Continuing, Hundeyin added, “The owner of the company is undergoing interrogation for reckless and negligent acts by failing to place any signs indicating the inherent danger or hire a guard to direct other road users away from the scene.

“The body has been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy and preservation. Investigation is ongoing.” – vanguard
