Army commences combat proficiency competition in Abuja

THE Army Headquarters Garrison has commenced combat proficiency competition for officers and soldiers drawn from units and formations under it.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition, which began on Tuesday in Abuja, was to enhance the combat readiness of troops.

The Commander, AHQ Garrison, Maj.-Gen. Koko Isoni, represented by the Garrison’s Chief of Staff, Brig.-Gen. Suleiman Tilawani, said training whether in peace time or war, remained the most important activity of every armed forces.

Isoni said it was the competences acquired from such trainings that the troops would transmit during real-time operations.

He therefore said that the competition would be used to test the strength of the officers, their capabilities, and state of combat readiness.

“This competition is also directed towards improving the leadership traits, organisational ability, and use of initiatives, especially among officers.

“To you the participants, let me remind you that you are the pillars upon which the operations of the Nigerian army rest.

“I therefore urge you all to make best use of opportunity offered by this competition,” he said.

The Garrison Training Officer, Brig.-Gen. EE Agada, represented by Lt.-Col. Onoja Okwoli, said participants were expected to compete in point to point navigation, skill at arms, and obstacle crossing.

Agada said situps and pushups, would also be added before the end of the exercise.

He said the competition would end on Friday, assuring the participants that adequate arrangements had been put in place to ensure a hitch free competition.

Agada urged all the participants to abide by the rules and regulations, set out for the competition.

He charged the technical officials and umpires to be fair and unbiased in their judgment. (NAN)
