HUMAN rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), on Sunday asked the Department of State Services to immediately charge the senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, Eyinnaya Abaribe, to court or grant him bail if it has not completed its investigations.
He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct all security agencies in the country to respect the fundamental rights of every citizen, as he charged the human rights community to be prepared “to halt fascism which has continued to rear its ugly head in the land.”
Falana , who anchored his demands on the undertaking by the Buhari-led Federal Government to stop impunity and respect the human rights of every person living in Nigeria under the rule of law, noted that the arrest and detention of criminal suspects and law-abiding people without court orders had continued unabated.
Operatives of the DSS reportedly arrested Eyinnaya and raided his home in the Apo Legislative Quarters in Abuja, on Friday.
But Falana regretted on Sunday that the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government had been unable to end impunity which members of the then opposition including Buhari suffered in the hands of the then Peoples Democratic Party-led government.
He said if the DSS had any evidence of the alleged offences against Abaribe, it should arraign him in court, or grant him bail if it had yet to complete its investigations.
He said, “The Department of State Services has said that Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe is being detained on account of his links with the Indigenous People of Biafra.
“It is common knowledge that the Senator had stood surety for Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB.” – Punch
