MR El-Nuhu Mathias, an Abuja-based artist said he would organise a poetry reading event to commemorate the country’s Independence Day, and awaken self-consciousness among youths, towards nation building.
Mathias in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja, said the event, tagged, “Stream of Consciousness 2.0”, would hold on Oct. 1.
According to him, the event, which is the second edition, will feature young entrepreneurs in fashion, art exhibition, musical display and others, while also serving as a business plug for participants.
“It tends to sustain unity in diversity through spoken word-poetic expressions, self-portraiture, art exhibition and musical performance that will encourage and offer youths, a platform to be heard.
“It is initiated to foster the convergence between common people from different backgrounds and raise the visibility of togetherness, awareness of self, and as a collective people.
“As we roll into events leading to the polls next year, there could be no better time than now, and most importantly, on October 1st, to come together as a people to awaken self-consciousness.
“It has become necessary to chart a new course for nation building, especially among the youths, ” he said.
Matthias added that the event also aimed to restore proper communication and acceptance of diverse cultures and traditions with adequate respect to human life and dignity.
He described the event as a fresh approach to appreciate the essence of living, through the eyes of poetry, which he added, awakens the mind and a sleeping mentality.
He said: “Poetry is a form of conscious expression that can have a positive impact on the social, political, religious, and economic orientation in us as citizens of this great nation.
“Unfortunately, a good number of issues are eating deep into the unity that should bind us together as a happy people and these challenges cannot be solved overnight.
“However, through awakening of conscious minds, on the significant national celebration of our independence, the event recognises the unique ability of poetry to recapture the creative spirit of our youthful minds.”
According to him, the initiative is seen as a counselling process that may help give better understanding of life to people, hence, bringing about nation building.
“Streams of consciousness, if embraced, offers us a way to empathise with one another.
“It is an immediate counseling’ process that helps us understand each other, leading us away from hate, to loving each other; from violence to mercy and empathy. It is a total self-conscious awakening to contribute to nation building,” he added.
The event, he noted, would be organised in partnership with Jerubal Global, Parrot Media Concept, Unique Collection and others. (NAN)
