Asaba 2018: Nigeria’s Onyekwere, Okoro clinch gold, silver in discus

NIGERIA’s Chioma Onyekwere and Chinwe Okoro on Friday won gold and silver medals respectively in Women’s Discus throws finals at the on-going African Senior Athletics Championship (ASAC) in Asaba, Delta.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Onyekwere recorded 58.08 points to clinch the gold while Okoro recorded 57.37 points to settle for the silver medal.

South African Ischke Senekal won the bronze in the tournament by throwing 53.32 points.

Also at the finals of the Men’s 800 metres race, Amos Nigel of Botswana won the gold medal after finishing at 1:45.20 seconds while Emmanuel Korir of Kenyan clinched the Silver at finishing time of 1:45.65 with Moroccan Smaili Mostafa winning the bronze at 1:45.90 seconds.

Nigeria’s Edose  Ibadin, who came seventh at finishing time of 1:48.31 and crashed out of the 800 meters race, expressed confidence of wining in subsequent championships.

In an interview, the American based Ibadin said that Nigeria had chances of doing better in long distance races.

He said that  he would take some time off, rest and cool off before going back for other championships.

According to Ibadin, it is a big honour for him to represent Nigeria in the championship. (NAN)
