GOV. Hope Uzodinma of Imo has said that remembering and rendering assistance to the country’s military personnel should not be restricted to the annual Armed Forces Rememberance Day.

The governor said this on Wednesday, during this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration in Owerri.

He affirmed his commitment to the welfare of serving military personnel, adding that he would also continue to render assistance to the families of the fallen soldiers.

According to him, that support for the military should not be only during the Remembrance Day.

Uzodimma thanked the civil society organisations, faith-based groups and private institutions for their support to the military.

He urged private schools to consider awarding scholarships to the children of fallen officers and men.

He said: “The support could be physical through monetary assistance, it could also be emotional through kind words of consolation and encouragement.

“My appeal is that we should not limit our assistance to the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, we should extend help whenever we have the resources,“ he said.

The governor appealed to Imo people not to hesitate in volunteering useful information to assist the security agencies in the fight against insecurity.

He called on those allegedly sponsoring insecurity in the state to see the solemn event of the Remembrance Day as an opportunity for sober reflection on the consequences of war and violence.

He described war as “an ill wind that blows no one any good”. (NAN)
