THE chairman of the Kano State self-help groups, Alhaji Ibrahim Naisa, has advised residents of Kano against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in order to avoid flooding.

The chairman made this call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Kano.

He said the advice became necessary, considering the harmful effects of refuse on human health as well as ensuring environmental cleanliness and the well-being of the people.

Naisa explained that the government was doing  its best to provide dump sites, where people could easily dispose their waste without having to block waterways.

According to him, people should try as much as possible to keep their environment clean; it is the responsibility of everybody to complement government’s efforts in this regard.

“Government has been encouraging people to clean their environment and inform the Refuse Management Board to evacuate waste”.

Naisa said that with the forecast by the meteorological bodies that many parts of Nigeria might experience flooding in 2018, it had become necessary to take cautions.

He added that the waste usually disposed by young children ended up in waterways, thus blocking the passage of water.

He, however, warned residents to always ensure the disposal of their waste in designated places for easy evacuation by cleaning contractors. (NAN)
