THE Managing Director of the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) Mr. Mike Ozoemena has urged people of the state to imbibe the culture of proper environmental cleanliness.
The ASWAMA Boss made the call when he led the ASWAMA enforcement team to monitor the level of compliance by the people to this month’s environmental sanitation exercise in Awka.
Speaking to newsmen at the Eke Awka market roundabout, the ASWAMA MD said most residents of Awka do not take the exercise seriously.
In his words “They rather wait to be policed than do what is proper.
I don’t know where some of our people get this idea that environmental sanitation is government business. That is a very wrong perception. On the contrary, keeping our environment clean is everybody’s business.’
He said it is the collective responsibility of everybody to ensure that the surroundings are always kept clean.
Mr. Ozoemena commended most residents of Awka who participated actively in the exercise by cleaning their surroundings and desilting water channels.
He urged those that do not give the exercise the seriousness it deserves to wake up and embrace the vision of Gov. Chukwuma Soludo towards achieving a clean and healthy Anambra State
The ASWAMA Boss, called on the residents of Awka to take advantage of the house to house collection of refuse and the pay direct initiative which has kicked off fully in the city.
He urged business owners and households to secure the ASWAMA waste bins to ensure adequate collection and disposal of wastes.
