ANAMBRA State Waste Management Authority, ASWAMA, has undertaken an awareness campaign on proper waste disposal round Awka metropolis.

The campaign, which was in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and the state security agencies were to sensitize the public on the need to bag their waste and drop in waste bins for onward evacuation.

The campaign took them through Amaenyi, Eke Awka, Amikwo and Amawbia axis.

Amechi Akorah, managing director of ASWAMA, while addressing journalists at Eke Awka explained that the essence of the campaign was to let people know that government would no longer tolerate the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the roads.

“We are creating awareness among our people, especially those people carrying on business on Amenyi, Amikwo, Eke Awka, as well as Amawbia, that dumping of refuse on the roads will not be tolerated anymore.

“They should look around their vicinities and make use of waste bins in their locality,” Akorah admonished.

The ASWAMA boss said that they held meetings with traders associations at Eke Awka, Ziks Avenue, Nkwo Amenyi and Eke Amawbia, stressing that they would work in synergy with representatives of the market associations.

According to him, they will also work with neighbourhood sanitation prefects to ensure that the desired goals will be attained.

Akorah enjoined the citizenry to desist from indiscriminate dumping of wastes in order to achieve clean and healthy environment, noting that defaulters would be penalised.

One of the traders at Eke Awka Market, who identified himself simply as Emitex commended the efforts of ASWAMA in keeping the capital city clean.
