THE Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has graduated 1,500 students in Sustainable Procurement, Environment and Social Standards Enhancement.

The programme was being implemented with support of the Work Bank’s project designed to check corruption in procurement as well as train experts in environmental and social standards.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Ibrahim Garba, said this during the graduation ceremony on Monday in Bauchi.

Garba, who is also the Coordinator, Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Center of Excellence (SPESSCE), said the virtual training programme aim to build the capacity of the students to address skill gaps in procurement, environmental and social standards.

“The training span through five tracks. Track ‘A’ is for five days where participants get their certificates, track ‘B’ is where participants learn within three to four weeks.

“We have track ‘D post-graduate diploma while track ‘E’ is professional and academic masters.

“The programme is designed to help the people in the procurement process to be more conversant with the existing law.

“The procurement law holds the Chief Executive Officers accountable but most of the time it is the procurement officers that are conversant with the laws and not the CEOs,” he said.

He said the programme trained procurement officers and CEOs to address inconsistencies in the procurement processes.

One of the graduands, Aisha Ibrahim, lauded the university for keying into the programme, adding that they learnt a lot about procurement processes and law. (NAN)
