THE Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBU -TH), Bauchi, says it has introduced modern incinerator plant to enhance management of medical waste in the facility.

The Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (C-MAC) of the hospital, Dr Haruna Liman said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Bauchi on Thursday.

He said the measure was part of strategies to enhance effective management of medical waste to promote public health.

This, he said, would facilitate proper disposal of medical waste through the incinerator system and discourage indiscriminate dumping of such waste in refuse collection sites.

“The management of waste in the modern system becomes imperative considering the health implications of such materials.

“ATBU-TH introduces the incinerator system installed in three different locations in the hospital.

“There is a well defined mechanism from point of generation to disposal.

“Hospital waste is hazardous and we have trained sanitary workers handle the waste,” he said, adding that the management of the hospital also provided waste bins indifferent colours to mitigate pollution.

He said the sanitation workers were trained on how to identify and segregate waste as as well precautionary measures in handling medical waste.

“The 700 bedded tertiary hospital is a place where people come to seek treatment so it has to be hygienic”. (NAN)
