Atiku announces Gov. Okowa as running mate

ATIKU Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate in the upcoming 2023 general elections has announced through his Face book account that the Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as his running mate.

The PDP has been searching for a running mate from the South of the country since Atiku is from Northern part of the country and some of the earlier shortlisted governors were Gov. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom, Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers, Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta and former Senate President, Pius Anyim.

In the statement posted on his Face Book account, Atiku said: “I am delighted to announce Gov. Ifeanyi A. Okowa as my Vice Presidential candidate. I look forward to travelling our great country together, engaging with all Nigerians and building a shared future of peace, unity and prosperity for all.

“As one, we can get it done,” he wrote.

At the moment, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, APC, and Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, are yet to announce their running mates for the 2023 general elections.

Realnews recalls that a 17-member committee had earlier been set up by the party to pick a running mate.

Iyorchia Ayu, PDP National Chairman, said that the committee had submitted three names to Atiku to choose from adding however, that the final decision however was Atiku’s.

Atiku while speaking at the announcement event noted that making a choice between the three names had been a difficult decision.

According to him, while all the three names submitted were qualified, he had to settle for just one: Okowa.

He also said that some of the qualities he looked out for include someone who understands the enormity of the challenges facing the country and one who has demonstrated, from experience, that he can proffer some solutions.

He said he looked out for one who has the qualities of a president, who can stand in for him when he’s not around.
