THE Nigerian Baptist Convention on Friday rated the Federal Government’s ongoing reforms high, predicting that they would take the nation out of the woods, if sustained.
The President of the Convention, Rev. Israel Akanji, gave the rating at a news conference held at the Lagos East Convention Secretariat at Obanikoro, on the 111th annual Convention scheduled to hold from April 20 to April 25.
Akanni, who envisaged a better Nigerian society as the outcome. of the reforms, appealed to citizens to support the government to achieve the desired results.
He stated that the Bola Tinubu -led administration inherited a battered economy that required sacrifices to repair.
According to him, the administration is, however, toeing the path of wisdom and embarking on popular reforms that are impacting positively on the people.
“The ongoing reforms in the nation’s money market is a healthy one as the value of a country’s currency, to a large extent, determines the value of the people.
” The Federal Government’s efforts in the Naira-Dollar crisis is fast yielding good result that will improve and enhance the value of the Naira.
“The war against insecurity in the country is being handled with utmost priority that it deserves and results are beginning to be recorded in many parts of the country.
“The attention being given to the Lagos-Calabar coastal road is one that will open up the nation’s coastal potential to revive the nation’s economy, particularly, as it concerns non-oil products.
“The war against corruption that has identified many loopholes and perpetrators, with many standing trials, is one that will send shivers down the spine of latent corrupt persons in public circle,“ he said.
The cleric urged the government to, as a matter of urgency, declare a state of emergency on the nation’s education with a view to restoring normalcy to the. sector.
“This will help to reduce the number of children who are out of school in the country and address crisis rocking tertiary institutions.
“The power sector which has been a challenge to successive administrations is being addressed by stakeholders with a view to having a permanent solution to it,” he said.
Speaking on the convention, Akanji said the event would draw worshippers from across the globe.
He said it would hold at the Baptist International Convention Centre (BICC), Kilometre 54, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Lufuwape, Ogun.
The cleric said that the convention, tagged “Super Centenary Anniversary” has the
theme : “Entering into Newness Through Discipleship and Apostleship”.
He stated that the event would be used to mark the church’s 110 years of gospel propagation in Nigeria.
Akanji said that it would also help to take stock and reposition the church for greater exploits.
He described the Baptist as a congregationalist church where decisions were taken with the input of members.
The reverend said that the convention, through its 14,000 churches across the country, would continue to project pro-life missions just as its founding fathers did.
He noted that the church, over the years, had collaborated with other churches and bodies to pacify displaced people, particularly, those in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in the Northern region.
Akanji said that the church would do more to give people sense of belonging.
He called on the public to attend the convention to experience divine visitation in every sphere of life, as anointed men of God would lead Christian faithful to commune with God. (NAN)
