Barrow reelected as President of Gambia

ADAMA Barrow has been reelected as president of the Republic of Gambia after being declared winner in the just-concluded presidential election held on December 4. 

Barrow was declared the winner of the election by the Gambian Independent Electoral Commission after defeating five other contestants’ in a landslide victory.

Realnews reports that he became the president five years ago in 2017 after defeating Yahya Jammeh who had ruled after seizing power in a bloodless coup in 1994.

According to the result which was announced by Alieu Momarr Njai, returning officer of the presidential election in the presence of the six contestants,  Barrow secured 457,519 votes followed by A.N.M. Ousainu Darboe with 238,253 votes, Essa Mbye Faal had 17,206 votes, Abdoulie Ebrima Jammeh secured 8,252 votes, while Mamma Kandeh had 105,902 votes, and Halifa Baboucar Sallah had 32,435 votes.

Having received and announced the results of the counting of votes from the assistant returning officers across the fifty-three constituencies, and “Having received 457,519 votes, in the election, I hereby declare Adama Barrow, duly elected to serve as President of the Republic of the Gambia,” Njai said.

Realnews reports that this was the first election since the former President Yahya Jammeh left office and fled the country after being defeated in an election in 2017 after ruling the country for 22 years, since 1994.
