Bauchi group advocates sign language interpreter for childbirth
General News
PEOPLE with Disability Initiative (PDI), a non-governmental organisation, has called for training of caregivers in sign interpretation to enhance maternal and child healthcare services in Bauchi State.
The Coordinator of the group, Hajiya Asmau Yahaya made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Monday.
She said the measure was imperative towards improving uptake of maternal and child healthcare services among People Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) in the state.
“To encourage hopital delivery among physically challenged persons, caregivers should be allowed into delivery suites with their patients.
“Communication using English Sign Language is a bit difficult, but with the aid of caregivers, I believe communication on uptake of other maternal and child services will be improved,” she said.
The activist, however, decried non-inclusion of PLWDs in architectural design of government buildings, public and other strategic structures in the state.
She alleged that there were no provisions to take care of the needs of the PLWDs in the recently renovated state secretariat complex.
“The trend poses challenge to PLWDs to attend functions in some public buildings including wash rooms,” she added. (NAN)
