Bauchi State Fire Service urges residents to prioritise safety

BAUCHI State Fire Service has advised residents of the state to be cautious and always adhere to preventive measures against fire outbreak.

The Public Relations Officer, Mr Mohammed Bature, made the call while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Wednesday.

He gave the advice while responding to  the efforts by the service in tackling the fire at Yelwan Kagadama community in Bauchi metropolis on Sunday.

The fire gutted a five bedroom flat where some property were destroyed whithout loss of lives.

“At exactly 12.30 p.m. on that day, a telephone call was received in the control room that there was a fire outbreak at Yalwan Kagadama in Bauchi metropolis.

“Upon arrival, the firemen found the building ablaze and immediately began firefighting efforts to contain and extinguish the flames by showcasing their expertise.

“The cause of the fire was unknown but we urge the residents of Bauchi to be very cautious and always adhere to preventive measures against fire outbreak by switching off all electrical appliances when not in use.

“They shouldn’t leave cooking unattended to, especially when a frying pan is on even for a minute; avoid uncontrolled refuse or bush burning and keep matches or lighter out of the reach of children,” he said.

The public relations officer also urged residents to always turn off cooking appliances when not in use, repair or replace faulty electrical appliances immediately and avoid overloading of electrical appliances on one socket.

According to him, a fire safety check only takes a few minutes but it can mean the difference between life and death, urging all to make it part of their routine before going to sleep.
