BAUCHI State Primary Healthcare Development Agency says it distributed 500 cartons of Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) worth millions of Naira to 21 Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) centres in the state.

The Executive Secretary of the agency, Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Friday.

He said that the RUTF was a support by UNICEF, Bauchi office as it had been out of stock since January.

Mohammed said “UNICEF supported the state with 500 cartons of RUTF recently.

“The items were distributed across the 21 CMAM centres in the state.”

He called on parents to adopt the use of local farm produce and backyard farming for healthy children.

He said pregnant women also require balanced diet for healthy children.

RUTF is an energy-dense, mineral and vitamin-enriched food that requires no preparation, specifically designed to treat Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM).

RUTFs are a revolutionary development in treating malnutrition and has similar nutrient composition to F-100 therapeutic milk, which is used to treat SAM in hospital settings.

Therapeutic foods contain added minerals and vitamins and are excellent sources of protein and energy.

And because they are single food sources loaded with all required nutrients, they are an efficient way to help malnourished children recover from malnutrition.
