- Governor Soludo Charges New Anambra Monarchs
By Paul Nwosu
IN his determination to emplace sustainable peace and progress in the communities of Anambra State, Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, recently presented certificates of recognition to four newly elected traditional rulers in the state.
The new monarchs who received certificates from Governor Soludo include: Igwe Alexander E. Azike of Igboukwu, Igwe Ikechukwu Ezeofor of Umuona, Igwe Mkpuorah Ngini of Isuaniocha and Eze Augustine Nwangwu of Ajalli.
While presenting the certificates to the new monarchs at the State Executive Council chambers, Government House, Awka, Governor Soludo congratulated them for being elected by their own people.
The Governor stressed that it was impressive that the monarchs went through the necessary processes in accordance with the Constitution, the Anambra State chieftaincy law, and the customs and traditions of their respective communities.
Governor Soludo did not mince words in stressing that now the new monarchs have duly been given certificates of recognition, any impostor that parades himself as the monarch of any of the communities would be arrested and could get a jail term of not less than six months.
According to Governor Soludo, “Under the law of Anambra State, if any other person addresses himself as a traditional ruler or forces anybody to address him as such, the person is guilty of an offence punishable with a minimum of six months imprisonment.”
Mr. Governor stated that the government is trying to create a distinct, separate institution of the traditional rulers that coexists with the community governance structure without stepping on the others’ toes.
He revealed that the state government had thus far conducted proper town union elections in 110 communities. For him, the character of his government has no intention to impose anybody on any community because it has to be the will of the people. He maintained that the state government would only come in when it gets to a situation which the people are unable to resolve the issues among themselves.
Governor Soludo earnestly advised the new traditional rulers to be fathers to all in their domains, and emphasized his expectation of peace, fairness, justice and love in their various communities.
He stressed that “udo na ifunanya”, that is, “peace and love” should be their guiding philosophy in ruling their communities.
The four traditional rulers who received certificates of recognition from Governor Soludo passed through the requisite processes at the community, town union and state levels, as well as security clearance.
