THE Vice-Chancellor of Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun, Prof. Jeremiah Ojediran, has appealed to the Federal Government to subsidise education to reduce the number of out of school children.
Ojediran made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Ota, Ogun.
He spoke while reacting to the recent report of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), which said the number of out of school children in Nigeria stood at 18.5 million in 2022 compared to 10.5 million in 2021.
The Vice-Chancellor said there was need for the Federal Government to subsidise tuition, provide books and encourage the establishment of more institutions to reduce the number of out of school children in the country.
“There is the need for the Federal Government to invest more in education as investment in education is low in Nigeria.
“Education should not be totally free but it must be heavily subsidised to encourage more students to go to school and reduce the number of out of school children,” he said.
Ojediran called on the Federal Government to provide job opportunities for graduates in order to encourage more students to enroll in higher institutions.
The Vice-Chancellor explained that many children were out of school because of poverty, hence the need for the Federal Government to provide incentives such as provision of scholarship and loans for students.
He appealed to the Federal Government to provide an enabling environment for industries to thrive in order provide jobs for graduates and reduce the number of companies that would be shutting down across the country. (NAN)
