Bells VC urges FG to properly fund higher education

THE Vice Chancellor, Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun, Prof Jeremiah Ojediran, has called on the Federal Government to properly fund higher education in order to improve the quality of tertiary and other levels of education in the country.
Ojediran made the call on Saturday in Ota during the university’s 14th convocation where various degrees, including doctorates, were conferred and prizes presented.
The vice chancellor noted that education was one of the fundamental factors of national development and indisputably served as a major agent of transformation and development all through human history.
He said that no nation could achieve a sustainable economic development without substantial investment in human capital.
“Education enriches people’s understanding of themselves and the world and at the same time provides the much desired impetus for development.
“It is the time for the Federal Government to wake up to its duties and responsibilities in properly funding higher education in the country.” he said.
Ojediran emphasised the need for government to give due respect and attention to the education sector through proper funding of the higher education to achieve a sustainable national development.
In his welcome address, the President and Chairman, Board of Trustees of the institution, Dr Kola Jamodu, said that the institution had recorded remarkable achievements since its inception in 2005.
Jamodu said that this could not have been achieved without the support of the founding fathers of the institution.
He commended former president Olusegun Obasanjo for his inspiring vision and great contributions to education in the country.
The New Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a total of 823 students graduated, with 47 of them bagging First Class Honours degrees; 422 Second Class Upper, 309 Second Class Lower and 45 awarded Third Class Honours.
NAN also reports that 177 postgraduate students also bagged degrees in different fields in the 2021/2022 academic session.
Miss Rahmat Arogundade, a graduate of Mechatronics Engineering in the College of Engineering, emerged the best graduating students, with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0. (NAN)
