Benue House of Assembly has called on security agencies in the state to check insecurity in Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue.
This was part of the resolutions reached by the house in a motion of urgent public importance moved by Mr Anthony Agom (Okpokwu/PDP), during plenary on Wednesday.
In the motion, Agom informed the house that security in Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue had been breached in recent times as a result of incessant kidnapping, cultism, robbery and arms proliferation.
“Within the last three months alone, there have been more than five cases of kidnapping in Okpokwu where one Mrs Addah and her relative, one Robert were kidnapped.
“Addah was released after a ransom of N2 million while Robert is still in their captivity for lack of ransom”, Agom explained.
He explained that if the incidents were not urgently addressed, economic and social lives of the people of Okpokwu would end as they have become afraid to go about their normal businesses.
Seconding the motion, Mrs Agnes Uloko (Ado/PDP), said that the security agencies must step up their games by applying the law prohibiting kidnapping and other social vices on Benue territory to any offender,
Contributing, the deputy speaker of the house, Mr Christopher Adaji, expressed worry at the rising criminal activities in the state and called for strengthening of the vigilante groups to support the conventional security agencies in tackling the menace.
The house, therefore, called on security agencies to set up surveillance in and around Okpokwu to forestall further kidnapping and other criminal activities.
The house also advised the people of Okpokwu to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate security operatives. (NAN)
