Berlin police force entry into squatted house
Foreign
BERLIN police had forced their way into a house occupied by squatters at the request of the local authority after being pelted with paint.
The occupants announced by loudspeaker that they would resist entry, as fireworks were heard exploding, according to dpa reporter on the scene.
Police tweeted that officers had suffered breathing difficulties after being sprayed with powder, thought to be from a fire extinguisher.
The police operation was aimed at allowing inspectors access to the building to check for fire safety.
Earlier, talks between police, the inspectors and lawyers acting for the occupants broke down, leading the local authority to request the police to use force to open the door.
“The negotiations between the local authority and the occupants had failed,’’ a police tweet said. (dpa/NAN)
