PROF. Abdullahi Mustapha, Director General, National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), says biotechnology advancements have the potential to stimulate emergence of new industries and employment opportunities.

Mustapha made this submission in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that by staying at the forefront of biotechnological advancements, Nigeria and Africa as a whole would enhance their global competitiveness.

Mustapha said industrial biotechnology could revolutionalise Nigeria’s manufacturing processes, making them more efficient, cost effective, and environmentally friendly.

“Through the use of enzymes, microorganisms and bio-based materials, we can produce a wide range of products, from bio-based chemicals to biodegradable plastics.

“This not only reduces our dependence on fossil fuels but also opens up new avenues for industrial growth and innovation.

“However, realising the full potential of biotechnology requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders.

“We must invest in research and development, strengthen our educational institutions and create enabling environment for innovation and entrepreneurship,” he said.

He added that public-private partnerships, international collaborations and supportive policies were also essential to drive the agenda.

The NBRDA boss expressed optimism that biotechnology would serve as a catalyst for economic growth, social progress and environmental sustainability. (NAN)
