The NEEM Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) says it has provided series of psychological supports for more than 100 young girls affected by the Boko Haram insurgency in the North East.
Mr Ahmad Jumare, Communication and Advocacy Manager of the foundation disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.
He said that through its flagship programme called ‘Counselling on Wheels’ initiative, the foundation had given counselling supports to the girls in the last few years.
“This initiative was introduced to discuss with victims having symptoms of stress, depression, anxiety and so on, as a result of what they saw during the violence.
“Some of these girls begin to withdraw from people; some become aggressive and end up abusing drugs.
“That is why our counsellors and psychologists move from local government to local government areas providing rehabilitation and reintegration programmes to these girls.
“We also intend to track more 16,000 clients over the next two years so as to build peaceful and resilient communities, as well as empowering individuals who can become productive to the society,’’ he said.
Jumare also called on other non-governmental organisations in the country to focus on providing psychological supports for victims of insurgency in the region.
He stressed the need to look beyond the material aids being provided for the victims, and added that additional psychological supports would enable them become more productive to the society.
NAN reports that NEEM Foundation is one of the non-profit organisations committed to improving the lives of those affected by the North East insurgency in Nigeria. (NAN)
