BREAKING NEWS, Defence
–
TO prosecute the war against terrorist group, Boko Haram in the northeast, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) consumes an average 1.9 million litres of average fuel each month. The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, disclosed this at the opening ceremony of the NAF Logistics Seminar held in Lagos on Tuesday.
The Nation gathered that at the rate of N200/litre, it costs the NAF at least N380 million each month to carryout aerial surveillance, bombardments and movement of equipment and personnel to the northeast war theatre.
Those at the seminar tagged “Repositioning NAF logistics for efficient employment of air power in response to contemporary national security imperatives,” were the Minister of Defence, Gen. Muhammad Dan-Ali (rtd), who was represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Danjuma Sheni; the General Officer Commanding, (GOC) 81 Division, Maj.-Gen. Isidore Edet; Flag Officers Commanding, (FOCs) Western Naval and Logistics Commands, Rear Admirals Fergusson Bobai and Beegroy Ibe-Enwo respectively; Air Officers Commanding, (AOCs) Logistics and Tactical Commands, Air Vice Marshals Sani Ahmed and Muhammad Mohammed, as well as the Chairmen of Air Force committees at the National Assembly, among others.
According to Air Marshal Abubakar, NAF has managed to continue its operations across the country despite the scarcity of aviation fuel because it was determined to ensure that no Nigerian territory was under siege.
He said: “To support air operations in the northeast, the NAF must put an excellent plan that will ensure availability of aviation fuel in the operational area, whether the product is locally available or not. The service consume an average of 1.9 million litres of aviation fuel monthly. The main fighter air plane we use, consume 2500 litres/hour and we fly at least two air planes at a time. At that consumption rate, the two consume 5,000 litres every hour and we run two missions.” – The Nation
