Borno clamps down on structures without legal documents
Politics, society
THE Borno Government has commenced sealing of offices and other structures of some Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) operating in Maiduguri without legal documents.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offices were sealed by officials of Borno Geographic Information Service (BOGIS).
Speaking to newsmen on the development on Wednesday in Maiduguri, the Executive Secretary of BOGIS, Alhaji Adam Bababe, said so far, eight structures had been sealed in the exercise.
Bababe said the exercise was to ensure that all structures in Maiduguri were backed with the relevant legal documents.
He said there are 183 international and local NGOs operating in Borno, but so far only 21 have contacted BOGIS to perfect documents of the structures they occupy.
According to Bababe, BOGIS had written series of letters to landlords of the concerned organisations, but they failed to turn up to perfect their documents.
He said that most NGOs, civil society organisations, private schools and hospitals operating in the state were reluctant to come for the perfection of their documents.
Bababe said this had made the government to embark on the enforcement exercise.
He added that BOGIS would soon go after banks and other financial institutions in the state.
Bababe also called on property owners to update their documents and pay the statutory ground rent as government would not hesitate to invoke relevant laws against defaulters.
He said that Borno government had been lenient with those who engaged in violating the Land Use Act with impunity. (NAN)
