TO facilitate the return of about two million internally displaced people, IDPs, in Borno State, the state government has announced that it was completing the “reconstruction and renovations” of 32, 290 housing units in seven affected council areas of the state.

The local councils include; Bama, Gwoza, Konduga, Damboa, Kaga, Chibok and Mobbar, a border council area with Niger Republic. Babagana Umara, state commissioner for Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement, RRR, stated this at a news conference organised as part of activities to mark 2017 Press Week for the Borno State council of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ.

According to him, more than 6, 550 other housing units would be renovated and completed before the end of this year. Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Yerima Saleh, an architect, he said that the councils’ general hospitals, schools, secretariat complexes, boreholes and other public buildings and structures have been completed in six councils areas including Mafa, Dikwa, Ngala, Askira/Uba, Biu and Hawul.

Saleh said this would fast track the return of displaced persons by December and the established civil authorities to enable the people return to their normal life.

“The ministry started the reconstruction works in affected communities with a view to rehabilitating and resettling the displaced persons. We have completed or are undertaking reconstruction and rehabilitation of the burnt/destroyed public and private buildings in the 14 Local Government Areas of the state.

“Borno State government has resettled many communities to their ancestral homes in Konduga, Dikwa, Mafa, Gwoza, Mobbar, Askira/Uba, Ngala, Kukawa, Monguno, and Damboa councils,” he said
