Engr. Baba Gujbawu, Chairman of the Flood Disaster Relief Disbursement Committee, disclosed this on Saturday at the cheque presentation ceremony in Maiduguri.
Gujbawu said the committee had spent the last two months verifying and distributing relief items to affected households in Maiduguri Metropolitan, Jere, and Mafa Local Government Areas as well as to traders from nine major markets in the state.
He said the affected markets include Gamboru Market, Monday Market, Tashan Damboa, Metro Plaza, El-kanemi, Vegetable Market, Customs Market, Moromoro Vegetable Market, Bukar Shuibu, and Budum Market.
He explained that the beneficiaries were categorized based on the extent of damage to their businesses, which ranged from minimal and partial to total loss, adding that the funds would be credited directly to the traders’ bank accounts.
He urged the beneficiaries to utilize the funds judiciously to rebuild and expand their businesses.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN ) reports that the committee also handed over 500 water pump generators to farmers affected by the disaster in Maiduguri and Jere LGAs.
Alhaji Bawu Musami, the Commissioner for Agriculture, who received the water pumps on behalf of the farmers, assured that the items would be distributed promptly to beneficiaries preparing for irrigation farming.
Highlight of the ceremony is the presentation of a dummy cheque to the General Manager of Maiduguri central market, popularly known as Monday Market by Chairman of the committee. (NAN)
