SAMBO Dasuki, a retired colonel and former national security adviser, who is facing trial on illegal possession of firearms, was granted bail by a federal high court in Abuja on Tuesday, September 1. Dasuki pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned on a one-count charge of illegal possession of firearms on Tuesday.

Mohammed Diri, director of public prosecutions, had filed the charge before Justice Adeniyi Adeniji of a federal court Abuja, who granted Dasuki bail on self-recognition.  The charge bothered on his alleged illegal possession of firearms contrary to section 27(1) (a) of the Firearms Act, CAP F28, Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

In his application for bail, JB Daudu, counsel to the former NSA, argued that Dasuki’s alleged offence was bail-able. “His being on bail does not mean he will interfere with the investigation or disappear‎. His passport is with the state. We ask that he is bailed on self-recognisance,” Daudu said.

Diri, on his part, did not object to the bail request, but told the court to use its discretion.

Thus, Justice Ademola, granted Dasuki bail on self-recognition, pending the determination of the charge against him. The judge also ordered the confiscation of Dasuki’s travelling documents.

Ademola adjourned the case for hearing between October 26 and 27.
