AKINWUNMI Ambode, Lagos State Governor, today declared that information is essential to human existence and progress thereby making it imperative for managers to be well grounded and prepared to build their capacity to perform their assignment of passing out information efficiently and effectively.

Ambode restated the position of his administration to transform the state into a modern, efficient and enviable one as well as its information machinery in order to deliver the message to the people, adding that the recent unveiling of the new Lagos Weekend Television entertainment package is part of the holistic plan to revitalize the State’s public information sector.

The governor, who made the remark in Lagos today while declaring open a three-day retreat for senior Public Affairs Officers in the State government employ, implored participants to use the retreat to reassess the effectiveness of the information machinery of the government, identify gaps, proffer solutions and come up with new ideas.

Ambode, who was represented at the event by Adebowale Ademola, state head of service, reiterated that the tripod policy trust of Security, Infrastructure Development and Job Creation of the present administration could not be effectively implemented without being properly reinforced and linked by a strategic and dynamic information and communication machinery.

According to him, “We are of the firm conviction that without effective information management mechanism, our desire to operate an all inclusive government might be an attempt in futility or a paper-tiger, hence our commitment to continue to upscale the capacity of all the state’s information dissemination organs.

He restated his administration’s commitment to build the capacity of its Officers across board to make the state civil service virile.

He, however, charged the participants to articulate governments’ policies and programmes, saying: “You must be well abreast of, not only the information to disseminate, but also be able to communicate the messages in a way that would be understood by the various segments of the public”.

The governor added that it will be uncomplimentary for Public Affairs Officers not to have a proper understanding and vast knowledge of the vision and policy direction of the government they are expected to project, imploring them to be open to new ideas.

Earlier, Steve Ayorinde, commissioner for Information and Strategy, stated that the retreat is important and unique in the annals of the ministry especially in its quest to ensure that the capacity of its officers are improved upon, in order to efficiently and effectively disseminate government plans, policies and programmes to the people of the state particularly those at the grassroots.

While commending Ambode for the acceptance and subsequent approval for the hosting of the retreat, Ayorinde noted that the sheer novelty of the retreat; the promise it offers and the support it got from the governor are good indicators of a new dawn not only in the Ministry but in the entire public service.

He urged the Public Affairs Officers to use the retreat to interact, rub minds on contemporary issues and challenges that affect the practice of the profession; acquire knowledge and forge new network necessary for experience sharing, techniques and good practice that would help in meeting the challenges of present public sector information management for greater performance.
