Nigerian Gets EBA Award

A Nigerian, Joseph Odhomo, who is the managing director of Pejoe Development Company Limited, wins Europe Business Assembly award for having the best business enterprise in the world hard work achievement of 2014

JOSEPH Odhomo, managing director, Pejoe Development Company Limited, has been recognised by Europe Business Assembly, EBA, for having the best business enterprise in the world hard work achievement of 2014. He was, accordingly, honoured with the International Socrate Award at the Institute of Directors, London, United Kingdom, on April 17, 2014.

After receiving the award, Odhomo, delivered a speech on ‘Human Training and Nigeria’s Local Content.’ In the speech, he called on the federal government of Nigeria to pay more attention to local content law in the country. He said that the essence of the law was to harness and improve employment creation and reduce the number of expatriates coming into the country.  He said that training overseas is what Nigeria needs because it will enable the foreign trains to fill essential positions without necessarily employing too many foreign expatriates when the country can get the same quality services the expatriates offer locally.

“I have training and local content policy as the ethos of my message for consideration by this meeting. I believe through ongoing training process, much could be achieved in the oil and gas industry in our nation – Nigeria, with little or no sufficient manpower, a situation in which the whole nation still depends on other nations for petroleum products. Therefore I would like to draw the attention of investors to the present position and elsewhere to look into this sector of our economy which still requires much input by foreign investors. In every developing nation like ours, the importance of training cannot be over-emphasised even in other sectors of the economy. Having travelled far and wide, training is a thing which we have not looked into properly, but one that can be drastically developed upon in order to achieve the latest technological advancement of the Africa Union Millennium Development Objective of 2020,” he said.

Odhomo said in view of the passage of the local content bill into law, the federal government should make it workable since it is vital for the future development of the nation’s economy. He said if government fails to validate the appropriate section of the labour law, the country would not achieve the desired results. “I believe we can achieve along this line what countries like Malaysia, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico and others have achieved in the last 10 to 20 years if we cultivate this as a sustainable habit.”
