AHMED Raji, counsel to Andrew Yakubu, former group managing director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, is asking the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to release his client since they have not made any formal charges against him.

Raji said that his client, who been has been detained for one month by the EFCC following the recovery of his money ($9.7 million and £74,000 cash) in his property needed his freedom to attend to his medical needs urgently.

Raji, in a statement issued on Sunday, March 12, said Yakubu since his detention had been denied access to adequate medical attention which he desperately needs, adding that neither the EFCC nor any other government agency has made formal charges against him.

“I n view of the foregoing facts, our client has sought an enforcement of his fundamental human rights before the Federal High Court, Abuja, in an action constituted as FHC/ABJ/CS/126/17 between Engineer Andrew Yakubu vs EFCC & Anor. Our Client has been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for more than a month since he voluntarily presented himself to them at their invitation and has fully cooperated with investigations”, the statement said.

He reiterated that his client did not commit any offence and was ready to clear his name in due course.
