Britain jails man for encouraging terrorism in Germany

A British court on Friday sentenced a 35-year-old man to a minimum of nine years in prison after he admitted planning terrorism and encouraging attacks in Germany.
Iranian-born Fatah Abdulah from the north-eastern English city of Newcastle pleaded guilty to charges of “preparing others to commit acts of terrorism and inciting terrorism overseas.”
Sentencing Judge Nigel Sweeney told London’s central criminal court, the Old Bailey that Abdullah had aimed to “cause mass murder in Germany.”
Prosecutors said at his trial that the Islamic State supporter had encouraged two men in Germany, Omar Babek and Ahmed Hussein, to carry out attacks by driving a vehicle into a crowd, attacking people with knives and using explosives.
“Hussein and Babek were arrested in Germany in 2019 and each sentenced to four years and eight months in prison for the preparation of a serious act of violent subversion involving unlawful handling of explosive substances,’’ British counter-terrorism police said.
The police said Abdullah also bought “thousands of matches, pre-cursor chemicals, fireworks, fuses, and other components to be used in the production of improvised explosives and recorded himself testing a remote control detonator he had purchased.”
Martin Snowden, head of Counter Terrorism Policing North East, said Abdullah had taken very real and significant steps to plan an attack and had purchased components he needed to develop an improvised explosive device.
“His extensive contact across digital platforms evidences his determination and intent to influence Hussein and Babek and encourage them to commit the most horrendous acts of violence,’’ Snowden said. (dpa/NAN)
