Irked by two terrible incidents in two weeks, President Muahammadu Buahri expresses sadness and condoles families of those who died

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari is deeply saddened by the colossal calamity in Saudi Arabia in which 717 pilgrims were killed, including Nigerians.

President Buhari said that the stampede at Mina which led to the death of prominent Nigerians such as Bilkisu Yusuf, a former editor and newspaper columnist, Tijjani El-Miskin, deputy Secretary General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, and others lost their lives was a monumental tragedy, not only for citizens of the countries involved, but for the global Islamic community.

The president, therefore, extended his sincere condolences to the families of those who were killed in the incident in the holy land, less than two weeks after a crane collapsed in Mecca and killed more than a hundred persons.

In a statement issued by Garba Shehu, senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, on Friday, September 25, the president commiserated with “the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Nigerian Union of Journalists on the sad loss of Hajiya Bilkisu, an exemplary, dedicated, knowledgeable, very credible, highly-respected, outstanding editor and columnist who, even in death, will remain a glittering role model for journalists, within and outside Nigeria.”

Buhari noted that the assurance by the Saudi Arabia’s government that the catastrophe would be investigated and therefore, urged King Salman to ensure a comprehensive and thorough exercise that would “identify any flaws in hajj organisation with a view to avoiding a recurrence of such tragedies during the annual pilgrimage.”

President Buhari prayed that Almighty Allah should comfort the families of those who lost their beloved ones in the stampede and receive the souls of all those who died in the holy land.
