The Nigerian Ports Authority is to dredge the Onne port to encourage bigger vessels to birth there

HADIZA Usman, managing director, Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, has said that the authority is engaged in efforts to increase the depth of the draught of Onne port to 11 meters as a way of encouraging bigger vessels. She said the NPA was committed to the development of deep seaports across Nigeria, in line with the development of the global economy.

Receiving Jesper Kamp, Danish Ambassador to Nigeria, who paid her a courtesy visit at the corporate headquarters of the agency,  Usman said the agency was equally fully committed to providing the enabling environment for businesses to grow in the maritime sector.

She, therefore, called for continuous engagement on the way forward, pointing out that as a pioneer in the maritime business, the Authority would always tap from the wealth of experience of the Danish government.

Earlier, Kamp had told Usman that he had embarked on the visit as part of his efforts to promote Danish-Nigerian trade relations and attract investment to Nigeria. He disclosed further that besides facilitating investment in infrastructure to Nigeria, he had been mobilising Danish companies to come and invest in Nigeria, as exemplified by Maersk Line and other companies.

The Danish Ambassador said that his government operated 30 commercial vessels in the Gulf of Guinea and, therefore, his country was concerned about security in the Nigerian maritime domain. He added that the Danish government was collaborating with NIMASA and IMO on the training of marine cadets and maritime security, calling on NPA to be part of the collaboration.
