On Monday, May 23, the African Development Bank, AfDB, in partnership with the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition, will host a high-level event on nutrition as part of AfDB’s Annual Meeting with African leaders, government ministers, philanthropists, and businesses to discuss ways to achieve nutrition security through increased investments and public-private partnerships.

The event, “Achieving Nutrition Security: A call for leadership, partnership, and investment,” will take place on the opening day of the AfDB Annual Meeting on Monday, May 23, and will be livestreamed. Credentialed media of the AfDB Annual Meeting may attend in person.

Host of the event, Akinwumi Adesina, President of the AfDB, will outline AfDB’s vision for the African Leaders for Nutrition, ALN, which aims to bring together leaders from across the continent to champion and increase investment in nutrition.

A discussion moderated by Uduak Amimo, Royal Media Services, will focus on the economic case for nutrition investment; the opportunity for cross-sector partnerships; and the critical need for political leadership to meet two of the AfDB’s ‘High 5’ priority areas, ‘Feed Africa’ and ‘Better Quality of Life,’ as well as the Sustainable Development Goals and the World Health Assembly Global Nutrition Targets.

Panelists and remarks will include Kofi Annan, chair of the Africa Progress Panel, former secretary-general of the UN and Nobel Laureate, John Kufuor, former President of Ghana and Global Panel co-chair; Jamie Cooper, chair and president, Big Win Philanthropy; and Aliko Dangote, chairman and CEO, Dangote Group.

The event in Lusaka builds on the Invest in Nutrition event held on April 17, in Washington, D.C. Global development leaders gathered around the World Bank Spring Meetings to launch the first-ever investment framework for nutrition. Research from a groundbreaking study has given policymakers and advocates a roadmap for how the world can accelerate progress against malnutrition.

Africa-specific nutrition cost and investment data will also be presented during the event by Shawn Baker, Director, Nutrition, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to help inform prioritization of nutrition investments.
