Businessman in court for allegedly obtaining N21.1m on false pretence

THE police on Wednesday arraigned Nonso Okafor, before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining N21. 1 million from seven people on the pretence of procuring visa for them.

The defendant, 38, a businessman, who resides at Ajah, Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence and stealing.

The prosecutor, ASP Raji Akeem told the court that the offences were committed on May 5, 2023 at Ikeja.

Akeem said that the defendant obtained N21. 1million from seven people led by the complainant, Mr Ismail Adeyemi.

The prosecutor said that the complainant and his other 6 friends approached the defendant for a Canadian, German and American visa.

The prosecutor said that after negotiation, N21.1 million was paid to the defendant and since then all efforts to get their visa or a refund of their money failed.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 287, 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Bola Osunsanmi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

Osunsanmi adjourned the case until Feb. 7 for mention.
