Businesswoman docked for allegedly cheating business partner

THE Police on Wednesday arraigned a 32-year old businesswoman, Grace Madaki, at a Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly cheating business parner of N1,013,680
The police charged Madaki of GODAB Estate, Life Camp Abuja, with criminal breach of trust and cheating.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Prosecution Counsel Eadwin Ochayi, told the court that the complainant Mr Edet Ekpo of Kuje Area Council Abuja, reported the matter at Life Camp Police station on July 29.
Ochayi alleged that the defendant contacted the complainant through a phone call to supply frozen chicken worth N1, 681, 680, and promised to pay in four days.
He said that the defendant paid N334, 000, leaving an outstanding balance of N1, 013,680.
According to the prosecution counsel, during police investigation, the defendant confessed to have committed the crime but failed to state the reason for her action.
The prosecutor told the court that the defendant breached the agreement and converted all the money for his personal use.
According to Nwaforji, the offence contravenes the Penal Code.
Mrs Charity Samuel, counsel to the defendant, prayed the court to grant bail to her client in the most liberal terms, while citing sections the 1999 Constitution and the Administrative Criminal Justice Act 2015.
The defence counsel also said the defendant would not jump bail or interfere in the investigation, adding that the defendant had a reliable and gainfully employed surety.
The prosecution counsel, however, did not object to the application of the defence counsel.
The Area Court Judge, Mohammed Wakili, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N800, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Wakili ordered that the defendant must provide reliable sureties, who must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.
He added that the surty must provide BVN print out, two recent passport photographs and a valid identification card, which must be verified by the Court Registrar.
The Judge adjourned the case until Sept. 13, for hearing. (NAN)
