IN a bold and timely move, Uche Onyeagucha, a former National Welfare Secretary of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, has written an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to take decisive action amidst the escalating protests against hunger and bad governance sweeping across the country.

Onyeagucha’s letter, dated August 5, 2024, presents two stark options for the President: dissolve his government and form a Government of National Unity, GNU or resign immediately.

The backdrop to this letter is the widespread discontent among Nigerians, who have taken to the streets since August 1 to demand better governance, economic opportunities, and an end to hunger and poverty.

President Tinubu’s recent broadcast to the nation, intended to address the crisis, has instead been perceived as dismissive and out of touch with the reality on the ground.

Onyeagucha’s letter serves as a stark reminder of the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for leadership.

Onyeagucha’s credentials as a pro-democracy activist during the regime of General Sani Abacha and his attendance at the 1995 World Conference on Democracy in Washington DC alongside President Tinubu lend weight to his words.          His experience within the opposition political parties of Action Congress, AC, Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, and the All Progressives Congress, APC, provides a unique perspective on the current administration’s shortcomings.

The letter highlights the President’s apparent contempt and ignorance regarding the level of hunger and anger among Nigerians.

Onyeagucha asserts that the President’s appointees are not providing accurate information about the state of affairs in Nigeria, exacerbating the crisis. This disconnect has fueled the widespread protests with citizens demanding tangible change.

Onyeagucha’s call for a Government of National Unity or the President’s resignation is rooted in a desire to prevent further escalation of the crisis. He warns that failure to act will lead to a severe political, economic, and social crisis, potentially destabilizing the nation.

In conclusion, Onyeagucha’s open letter serves as a clarion call to President Tinubu to demonstrate wisdom, courage, discipline, and statesmanship in addressing the crisis. Nigerians await the President’s response, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the impasse.

The coming days will be crucial in determining the direction of the country and the world watches with bated breath as Nigeria navigates this critical juncture.
