AMEN Healthcare and Empowerment Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation ( NGO) in partnership with Gombe State Government has started training medical/health workers on early signs of cervical and breast cancer.
The Founder and President of the organisation, Mrs Rita Oguntoyinbo, said at the launch of the training in Gombe on Friday that it would help to reduce female mortality from cancer.
She explained that the state’s Ministry of Health had nominated health workers from four health facilities for the training.
She added that “we have state Specialist Hospital which will be the referral centre, General Hospital Bajoga, Kaltungo and Kumo. We are going to train three people each for these hospitals.
“Today and tomorrow will be theoretical sessions, then from Monday, all the teams will move from one hospital to the other to commence training.”
According to her, the training is to guide the health workers to identify early cancer signs for better management.
She added that at the end, the trainers were expected to educate women in their respective communities on how to conduct breast cancer examination, as well as identify suspected cases.
Oguntoyinbo further said that at the end of the training, the foundation would provide equipment and consumables to enable the trained workers to start working immediately.
Mrs Zainab Haruna, the Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Health, commended the foundation for the partnership and assured of sustainability.
Haruna, represented by Dr James Mahdi, the Director, Hospital Services, promised to continue partnering with the foundation, going by the passion of the state governor on health sector.
She urged participants to pay attention during the training to be able to train others. (NAN)
