Carpenter jailed 12 months for stealing cell phone, N10,000

AN Area Court in Jos on Tuesday sentenced a 25- year -old carpenter, Yakubu Shehu to 12 months imprisonment for stealing a cell phone worth N50, 000 and N10,000 cash.
Magistrate Thomas Ajitse, who sentenced Shehu however, gave him an option of N20,000 fine, after he pleaded guilty to the two count charge of trespass and theft.
He also ordered the convict to pay compensation of N70, 000, to the complainant.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat told the court that the case was reported at the ‘A’ division Police station on Dec. 7, 2022 by Mr Levy Adoyi.
He said that the convict trespassed into the guest house were he was lodged stole his bag containing his cell phone.
The prosecutor further told the court that during police investigation the convict confessed to the crimes.
The offence, he said, contravened the Plateau Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria. (NAN)
