A Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Friday  sentenced a carpenter, Abubakar Amodu, to 27 months in prison for assault and causing hurt.

Amodu, a resident of IDP Camp, Area 1, Abuja, was convicted on counts of assault and causing hurt, following his guilty plea and evidence adduced by the police.

Amodu, however, begged for leniency.

The Judge, Mr Aliyu Kagarko, gave the convict an option of N50,000 fine, saying that the punishment would serve as a deterrent to others.

The prosecutor, Mr Orisaemeka Okeke, had told the court that the complainant, Mr Sale Amodu of the same address,  reported the case at the Durumi Police Station on April 2.

Okeke said that, on the same date, the complainant had a misunderstanding with the convict over of slippers.

He said that, in the process, the convict violently and intentionally used a hammer and injured the complainant on the forehead.

He said that the complainant was consequently rushed to a hospital.

The prosecutor added that during police investigation, the hammer was recovered from the convict.

The alleged offences are contrary to Sections 265 and 246 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
