THE National Obstetric and Fistula Centre, Ningi, said it will provide skill acquisition training to 100 women treated of Visco Viginal Fistula (VVF) in Bauchi State.
Mr Mohammed Hardawa, Head of Social Welfare Unit of the Centre, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Thursday in Ningi, Bauchi.
Hardawa said the training was an integral part of the rehabilitation programme designed to empower women who were successfully treated in the centre.
He said the centre had introduced a community-based approach to facilitate smooth conduct of the exercise.
The training programme is being implemented with the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and is scheduled to be conducted within six months.
“The skill acquisition training is targeting 100 persons across the 20 local government areas of the state.
“The Centre rehabilitate its patients before they are reintegrated into society.
“In the past; the approach was institutionalised; this is where all the beneficiaries converged in a centre for the six months training.
“Presently, we are into community approach to enable the beneficiaries to identify a skill of their choice within their communities.
“This is to address logistic issues and make it flexible unlike in the past where sewing was largely the skill,” he said.
Hardawa said VVF condition was socially inclined, therefore, focus on rehabilitation has been paramount.
“Most of the clients are from the grassroots and with low level of literacy, if they are not rehabilitated they become psychologically defeated,” he said.
Some of the beneficiaries, Ms Maryam Inuwa and Hussaina Hussaini, commended the gesture, adding that it would improve their socioal and economic status. (NAN)
