The University of Benin inducts 103 pharmacy graduates and urges them to team up with other healthcare providers to deliver quality service to patients
THE federal government is irrevocably committed to the elimination of fake and substandard drugs in Nigeria. Gloria Abumere, a pharmacist and acting registrar, Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria, gave the assurance at the oath-taking and induction ceremony of the 2012/2013 pharmacy graduands held at the Akin Deko auditorium, University of Benin, UNIBEN. Abumere said the production of 103 pharmacists no doubt, would help to address the paucity of pharmacists in the health care delivery system. She advised the pharmacist graduands to work as a team with the health care providers for the overall benefit of the patients.

Abumere’s advice to the graduands came on the heels of a lecture on Drug Regulation and National Security which, was delivered by Solomon Aigbavboa, pharmacist, and the managing director, MDS Logistics. Aigbavboa said drugs wrongly used have adverse effects on the society, and stressed the need for drug regulation in Nigeria to be strengthened.
Also speaking, Professor Osayuki Oshodin, vice chancellor, University of Benin, who was represented by Professor Obehi Okojie, deputy vice chancellor (Academics), advised the graduands to be good administrators of the university as according to her, the acquisition of a university degree was not the end and “it confers on one, greater responsibility.”
Professor E.O. Osazuwa, dean, Faculty of Pharmacy, UNIBEN, said the Faculty of Pharmacy was striving to be the number one school of pharmacy in the country. There were goodwill messages from senior members of the pharmacy profession.
Osita Idemili, a pharmacist and managing director, OSKAJAY Pharmcacy, responded on behalf of the parents of the graduands and called on health care providers to do away with bickering and wrangling and focus on the ultimate goal which is to give the patient the best health care. Idemili, who is the father of Nwachukwu Idemili, one of the graduands, expressed gratitude to parents for committing so much funds to the welfare of their children during their stay in the university.
David Chukwubuikem Nwakor, who is the overall best pharmacy graduand of the 2012/2013, expressed gratitude to parents and lecturers for the sacrifice made to bring them to the position they have attained.
