A data privacy consulting firm, Data Knowledge Information Privacy Protection Initiative (DKIPPI) on Friday called for protection of data in the quest for good governance.
The Convener, DKIPPI, Mr Tokunbo Smith, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that individuals should safeguard their data as fiercely as they were demanding for good governance.
Smith said that as Nigerian youths embarked on a peaceful protest advocating for better governance, it was crucial to recognise that the fight extended beyond the streets and social media.
He said that the fight reached to the very essence of the digital lives of citizens to the protection of personal data, especially in this era of technology.
According to the DKIPPI convener, data is power and our personal data, whether identity, financial details or even our opinion, has immense value and can be used to empower or manipulate if in the wrong hands.
“This is why I said our calls for better governance must also champion the course of data privacy.
“Data privacy is not just a technical issue, it is a fundamental right. It ensures that our personal information is safeguarded from misuse and abuse.
“When we protect our personal data, we protect our autonomy, our freedom and our voices,’’ he said.
According to Smith, for individuals, protecting personal data means being vigilant about what information to share and with whom as well as use of strong unique passwords.
He said that individuals should update their software to protect against vulnerabilities, adding that business owners had greater responsibility.
He said that business owners should educate their staff on the importance of data privacy and the role they should play in protecting it.
According to the data privacy expert, engaging in data privacy training is a way of contributing to the culture of trust and security in our society.
He said that as Nigerians demanded for accountability and transparency from our leaders, they should also practice the principle of digital interaction.
Smith said that there should be transparency in handling personal data, and owners should hold themselves accountable for its protection.
He said: “In our protest for good governance, let us also safeguard our personal data as fiercely as we demand for good governance.
“Together, we can build a future where our personal data is secured, our voices heard and our demands for good governance are met.
“Stand strong, protect your personal data and let us continue to fight for a good Nigeria.’’ (NAN)
